Mini Graveyard Dirt Cakes

Saturday, October 22, 2011

In case you missed it yesterday, I guest posted at The Letter 4 for The Ultimate Halloween Party! 13 hours of Halloween goodness and it was pretty awesome!! I definitely recommend heading over there and checking out all the great goodies!

My contribution was my Mini Graveyard Dirt Cakes, which I'm going share with all of you guys right now :)

* * *
When I was a kid, every year a friend of mine's mom used to make dirt cake for the whole class. We all looked forward to any occasion when we were able to have dirt cake. She even used to put little gummy worms in it to make it more like dirt.

This memory came to mind this year when Halloween came around and I decided to give it a try with a little Halloween twist. This is such a simple little treat and it is delicious!!

Cast of Characters:

Candy:
White Chocolate Chips
Chocolate Chips
Orange Candy Melts
Candy Mold

Cake:
Quart Mason Jars
Chocolate Cake
Chocolate Pudding
Cool Whip
Baker's Chocolate Squares

Labels:
Halloween Printables from The Twinery
Jute Twine

I started off by making the candies to accent the cake.  I melted down chocolate chips (white and regular) and melted down the candy melts.  I painted the eye and nose sockets with chocolate and the "RIP" with the orange candy melts. I didn't have a small enough brush so I used the tine of the fork but a brush m=would help it be more exact. I put them freezer to get hard and then I poured the white chocolate in each mold and scraped the excess off with a knife. I put them in the freezer to harden quickly.

Then I built the cakes. I layered the ingredients, crumbled cake, pudding, whipped cream.

I repeated this twice and then I shredded some of the Baker's chocolate and sprinkled it on top.

I popped the candy out of the mold and placed one on the very top of each cake as a graveyard surprise when popped open.

Next, I cut out the printables, trimmed their corners and tied them onto each jar with the jute twine.

...there you have it. Mini Graveyard Dirt Cakes.

Hope you enjoyed this super simple Halloween treat! Happy Halloween!!
